CONFESSION

"I didn't mean to do it - I'll swear that on the bible. I didn't go to the Lounge to kill Mrs. Black, but to give Mrs. White back the spanner that she had left in the Library. Okay, maybe I may have thought about killing her when Mrs. White mentioned just how much that ruby brooch could raise; and maybe I thought - 'Yes, that would solve all my problems' but I never seriously thought …"

"Anyway, I went to the Lounge to give Mrs. White her spanner - but she wasn't there. Where she'd gone I don't know. I had just turned around to leave, when I heard a creak come from the corner of the room. It was the secret passage opening; and coming out of it was Mrs. Black holding a rope. She said that she was surprised to see me here and I said I was more surprised to see her creeping out of the secret passage. She said that she wanted some piece and quite, so had come through the secret passage so that no-one would see her."

"And then I saw it. The ruby brooch sitting on her shoulder. I remembered how much it was worth, I remembered how the loan sharks wanted their money and how they threatened me - I NEEDED that brooch. Then it came to me. No-one had seen either of us enter the room. If I killed her, then no-one would know that she was missing for ages, which would give me time to get back to the Library and pretend I'd been there the whole time. In a split second I had made my decision and I hit her with the spanner in my hand. As soon as I'd done it I realised what I'd done. I couldn't believe it. Yet another stupid decision."

"In horror and panic I decided to hide the body in the cellar (taking the ruby brooch first of corse - I did still need it). That was another mistake because as I hid the body, I dropped the spanner on the floor. I had just noticed it when I heard the door to the study start to open. I quickly threw the spanner into the Hall so that I wouldn't be seen with it, and ran back to the Library. I just made it in time before Dr. Black came out."

"I would have got away with it if I hadn't made so many mistakes. Well, the Lord knows best."
